Description

A mercury blood pressure machine, also known as a mercury sphygmomanometer, is a manual device used for measuring blood pressure. It consists of an inflatable cuff, a mercury-filled column (manometer), and a bulb for inflating the cuff. The mercury column rises and falls within the manometer as pressure changes in the cuff, displaying blood pressure readings in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Healthcare providers inflate the cuff to occlude the brachial artery, then slowly deflate it while listening for sounds of blood flow with a stethoscope placed over the artery. Mercury blood pressure machines provide accurate measurements and are commonly used in clinical settings due to their reliability and precision. However, due to environmental concerns, they are being phased out in favor of alternatives like aneroid or digital sphygmomanometers.
