Description

Chest drainage, also known as thoracic drainage, is a medical procedure used to remove air, fluid, or pus from the pleural space, the area between the lungs and the chest wall. This is achieved using a chest tube (thoracostomy tube) connected to a drainage system. The procedure is commonly performed to treat conditions such as pneumothorax (collapsed lung), pleural effusion (fluid accumulation), hemothorax (blood in the pleural space), and empyema (pus in the pleural space). The chest tube is inserted through a small incision in the chest wall and guided into the pleural space. It is then connected to a drainage system, which may use gravity or suction to facilitate the removal of air, fluid, or pus. This helps re-expand the lung and restore normal breathing function. Chest drainage systems are essential in managing thoracic conditions and preventing complications such as respiratory distress and infection. They are widely used in emergency medicine, surgery, and critical care settings.
